Answer on February 8, 2018 from Mister Howarth John

Dear Marleen Deglin,

Many thanks for your email and apologies in the delay in getting back to you.
I would like to thank you for raising to my attention your concerns around the reliability of the Elisa test, and the serious lack of understanding around the disease within the scientific community.
As a British MEP, the question of Lyme disease is a particularly important one, given the worrying surge in numbers of reported cases of Lyme Disease to our National Health Service. Public Health England has recently estimated that there are 3,000 new cases of Lyme disease every year, figures show that the number of cases quadrupled between 2011 and 2015.

I have liaised with our Labour Health spokesperson in the European Parliament. He will be submitting a Parliamentary Question to the Commission highlighting the scale of this problem, and the urgent need to address the misunderstandings around the disease across the EU. He will also be asking the Commissioner how much EU funding has gone into Lyme Disease research over the last 10 years and what future research plans they have to address these imbalances.

Thank you very much again for raising these important issues and do not hesitate to get in touch if I can be of any further assistance to you in this campaign.

Best wishes,

John Howarth

Dear Mr Howarth,

Thank you very much for your answer.

In the meantime we had a contact with Mrs. Liadh Ni Riada, who proposed us to make a resolution for Lyme disease for Europe.

Ni Riada Liadh (Ireland)

This resolution has already been proposed and voted in the ENVI Health Committee and will go to the plenary vote on September 10, 2018.

During the month of August, we will write you an email with more information about it.

Kind regards,

Marleen Deglin
